The Performing Arts

Sarah's class performed two plays tonight. They split the class into two groups. One group worked on a play about Phyllis Wheatley, and another group worked on a play about George Washington Carver. Sarah and her good friend, Charmaine, were in the Phyllis Wheatley play. Sarah played the role of "Sarah," a slave working in the home of the Wheatley famly when they bring Phyllis home to live with them. Charmaine was a fellow slave for the family.

We had to provide our own costume. I got together with Jan to make the apron and mob cap, and we spent most of the afternoon together shopping, cutting and sewing. Jan came to the rescue to sew the mob cap since I wasn't sure how to pull it together. The good news was Sarah loved the outfit and seemed especially pleased with the mob cap.

We spent so much time preparing for the plays, and they were over so quickly! We thought Sarah was quite convincing as "Sarah." It was a neat experience for the kids.
